Event Note
Caroline Lane appears in the 1851 census in two places. Could it be that there had been a mighty marital row and she had left her husband George at home with their 1 year old boy, Charles, to go back to her parents. George had his wife's name entered in the census form, although she was not there. That would have been plausible: there was, after all, a baby in the house. This may also explain why she seems to have persuaded the census taker at her parents house to replace 'Marr(ied)' by 'U(nmarried)' against her name. Whatever the reason, they must have sorted it out since they went on to have seven more children.
